Farukhabad Gharana

This gharana was established by Ustad Haji Vilayat Ali Khan around 1700 to 1750 A.D. who migrated from Lucknow to Farrukhabad after years of training from Ustad Bakshu Khan of the Lucknow Gharana. Its repertoire is not the same as Benaras, Punjab, Delhi, or Ajrada Gharanas. It has a mixture of bols from other instruments like Nakkara, Dhol, etc. This gharana puts equal emphasis on almost every composition. It is believed that this gharana has the richest stock of:

  • Gats (chalan and different kinds of Gats as Manjhedaar, Badhaiwali, Do Mukhi, Gend Uchhal, etc)

  • Tukdas 

  • Chakradars (different kinds such as Farmaisi, Kamali) and

  • Rao (a version of kind of Rela)

  • compositional work

Special phrases of this gharana are Dhere Dhere, Takita, Ghedenaga, Ghedan, Dingnadan, Dhumakite, Kredhen, etc.  Some of the prominent tabla players of this gharana are Ustad Munir Khan who is being claimed by some as the initiator of Laliana Gharana- still an unclaimed name in the realm of Gharana), Ustad Masit Khan, Ustad Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa, Ustad Amir Hussain Khan, Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh, Pandit Nikhil Ghosh, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Pandit Shankar Ghosh, Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, Pandit Subhankar Banerjee, Pandit Abhijit Banerjee, Pandit Bickram Ghosh, and Pandit Aneesh Pradhan.
