Punjab Gharana

Punjab Gharana 

This gharana originated with Lala Bhavani Das, who himself was a Pakhawaj player. Though it is a controversial story of how and exactly when this gharana was formed, people say that this is the youngest gharana of all. A portion of this Gharana is also said to have the influence of Jodi, which is tabla played with the influence of Pakhawaj sound and Pakhawaj Puris (skin heads of Tabla with deep sound).

Some of the characteristics of this gharana are:

  • openness in playing

  • mathematical approach to the making of compositions

  • difficult compositions that require a lot of strength

  • Usage of more Pakhawaj style of bols

  • usage of Mishra Jati compositions

Mainly their focus is on lengthy and aesthetically beautiful Relas, Gats, Parans. Bols which are normally recited in this gharana are, Dhati, Dhat, Dhaad, Dhud, Dhedhena Kat. Some of the noteworthy tabla players of this gharana are, Ustad Allarakkha Khan, Karim Bax Perna, Baba Malang, Ustad Firoz Khan, Ustad Tari Khan, Ustad Zakir Hussain, and Pandit Yogesh Samsi.
