Tanpura

The Tanpura is a drone instrument that has four strings. It produces a vibrant sound and is used for accompaniment by both vocalists and instrumentalists. In ancient Indian texts, Narada has been given credit for the invention of Tanpura. Tanpura is made of wood, and its base is made of gourd. The Tanpura produces a unique harmonic drone that gives tonic references to the artists. There are two significant styles of Tanpura: • Miraj style - The Miraj style Tanpura is used in North Indian Hindustani Music. It is characterized by a well-rounded face, a non-tapering neck, and a base made of a pumpkin shell. The bridge is slightly curved, which provides the sound upon stringing. It also generates harmonics, enhancing the tonal quality of the instrument. • Tanjore style - The Tanjore style Tanpura is used in Carnatic music. It is characterized by a neck tapering toward the top, and the front plate is very flat. The base is made of jackwood. There is a smaller version of the instrument, which is called the Tamboori.
