Raag Puriya is a peaceful, evening raag that has been studied and performed for over 300-400 years. As a close member of the Marwa thaat, Raag Puriya shares the same scale as Raag Marwa and Raag Sohini . While Raag Sohini is an uttaraang pradhan raag that is presented with a feeling of separation and longing; Raag Puriya is a poorvaang pradhan raag that evokes peace and tranquility within the listener.

Key Features of Raag Puriya:

  • Puriya is a marwa-ang raag.

  • As a poorvaang vadi and poorvaang pradhan raag, the development of this raag occurs in the mandra and madhya saptaks

  • Pancham is varjit.

  • Although Puriya and Marwa have identical swars in their scales, they differ in their sound due to the difference in their nyaas swars. Marwa phrases rest predominantly on Re and Dha whereas Puriya phrases rest predominantly on Ga and Ni.
